Airport Security Coordinator
POSITION OVERVIEW
Full Time, Non-Exempt position. A key component of the Operations, Safety and Security OSS Department, the ASC maintains a safe and secure airport environment by coordinating security matters with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), airlines, airport tenants, staff and emergency responders. In coordination with the law enforcement, TSA and emergency responders, monitors, coordinates and resolves operational concerns, unusual situations, and emergencies in the terminal, apron or other airport facilities. Reviews airport security programs, security directives and airport tenant activities for compliance with airport and federal regulations. Manages day-to-day security operations and security badging requirements. This position requires interaction with airline staff, general public and airport staff.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reviews and documents airport security programs and directives and security activities of airport tenants and employees to ensure compliance with local, state and federal security regulations. Ensures availability of documents for review by federal agencies.
- Initiates corrective action for failure to comply with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Volume 9, Chapter XII, Part 1500, the airport security program of other security directives. Reviews and monitors the results of access investigations required under 49 CFR Part 1500.
- Validates the need for security clearance and authorizes approved airport users seeking access to Security Identification Display Areas (SIDA). Conducts background verifications on SIDA badge applicants as required by 49 CFR Part 1500.
- Maintains a good working relationship with the general public, airlines, airport users and airport staff by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with individuals and groups.
- Maintains operational capability and security of badging system and performs multiple security checks throughout the airport.
- Monitor all access points to secured/SIDA areas in compliance with 49 CFR Part 1542; ensures completion of mandatory daily quota of random badge inspections and prohibited items checks.
- Plans for, coordinates, and facilitates annual TSA inspection.
- Acts as liaison with air carrier station managers and ground security coordinators regarding airport and air carrier security issues.
- Represents airport management in coordinating airport emergency and disaster management plans with the TSA, law enforcement agencies, U.S. Customs, airlines and other tenants, and emergency relief organizations.
- Designs and conducts security exercises to train and rehearse airport and airline personnel, tenants and emergency relief organizations in a wide variety of disaster contingencies, including and comprehensive annual 49 CFR Part 1500 Aviation Security (AVSEC) tabletop exercise.
- Evaluates exercises and actual emergency response results to ensure a high level of security. Communicates outcomes to participants and management. Recommends changes to security procedures, policies and practices. Implements and exercises approved security procedures, policies and practices in exercises and day-to-day operations.
- Documents security training and maintains records as required by 49 CFR Part 1500.
- Maintains awareness of existing and new legislation impacting security and ensures compliance with federal, state, local requirements. Anticipates future legislation and develops plans to meet new security requirements. Advises airport management on needed action. Contributes to the team effort by performing related and assigned duties as needed.
- Creates and plans emergency mobilization procedures and tests response by working with airport staff, law enforcement, and public safety and security resources. Helps direct the mobilization of emergency responders in the event of emergencies or disasters.
- Point of contact for law enforcement and security gate guards.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The ASC may be the first on scene in the event of a terminal emergency and will coordinate with the arriving OSS staff as to the nature and location of the emergency and may assist with the fire alarms and medical response calls.
- The ASC primary responsibility during a major airport emergency is security, however the ASC may be required to assist the OSS Department with other duties.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE LEVEL:
Must have a high school diploma or GED; a minimum of three (3) years of experience in airport operations, airport security or administering provisions of 49 CFR Part 1500 at a commercial airport is highly desired. Supervisory experience in Law Enforcement, Aviation Management, Rescue and Firefighting, Public Administration, or Business Administration is considered beneficial for this position.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid Class C Colorado Driver’s License required in compliance with the local and state laws.
- Must become a certified Airport Security Coordinator (ASC) through a TSA approved class within three months of hire.
- Timely completion of Basic First Aid and CPR courses required.
- ICS certifications in ICS 100, 200, and 700 within six months from date of hire.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to pass a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC).
- Must be able to successfully complete a Federal Security Background Check to comply with TSA SIDA badging requirements.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
- Must possess thorough knowledge of 49 CFR Part 1500.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances for working at an airport.
- Knowledge of the following areas is required: TSA organizational structure and responsibilities, TSA rulemaking, policy and guidance, SIDA and access control issues, General requirements of an airport security program, Law enforcement support of security programs and the passenger screening system, Emergency preparedness and crisis command, and Terrorism-related issues.
- Requires proficiency in computer skills and experience with all Microsoft Office Professional applications.
- Requires ability to understand and effectively operate computer related applications such as security, badging and fingerprint systems.
- Previous Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) experience desired.
- Previous Information Technology (IT), security camera systems and door access control systems experience highly desired.
