About the Position

As our Utility Worker, you will perform maintenance duties of University grounds in a comprehensive outdoor maintenance program.  This will include, but not be limited to, constructing, maintaining, modifying, and repairing grounds facilities such as roads, parking lots and surfaces, landscapes, athletic fields, walkways, irrigation systems, utility systems, and large brick hardscapes.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing semi-skilled maintenance and construction work on buildings, fixtures, equipment, trees, grounds, irrigation systems, walks and driveways
  • Operating other power tools and equipment and motorized equipment in the performance of job duties
  • Maintaining storm water system
  • Setting up for events on athletic fields
  • Other duties as needed
    • During periods of inclement weather involving snow, operate a variety of vehicles (sanding truck with snow blade, tractor, gator) in order to clear streets, parking lots, and sidewalks
    • Apply sand and de-icer during periods of inclement weather
    • Remove trash and other waste on campus

This position is considered essential personnel, which means you must report to work when called on to do so.  

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Two years of work experience involving:
    • Grounds maintenance
    • Outdoor utility construction, maintenance, or repair
    • Light carpentry; and
    • Landscape construction, maintenance, or repair
  • Demonstrated experience or ability to perform work in a commercial and/or institutional setting
  • Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to starting work in order to drive a state-owned vehicle for travel to work locations
  • Physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to work with computer hardware and software required to track work orders and record time worked.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional outdoor construction experience
  • Demonstrated construction equipment operation including backhoes, excavators, and trailers
  • Demonstrated experience operation with Vactor trucks
  • CDL Class A driver's license
  • Knowledge of: applicable Washington Administrative Code (WAC) regulations, and local building and plumbing codes
  • Knowledge of: Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA), Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) rules and regulations, standard job safety rules, proper use of a face respirator 

Salary

New hires typically begin at $3,122/month, including an excellent benefits package

Bargaining Unit

This position is part of bargaining unit B and is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with the Washington Federation of State Employees.
