Research Technician in Hydrology

Position Description: A temporary part-time hourly position is available for a research technician in hydrology within the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resources at Western Carolina University. Responsibilities include the collection and manipulation of water quality data for several research projects in western North Carolina. Specific tasks include a combination of laboratory and field work, including (1) the installation, maintenance, and programming of water quality equipment including ISCO automated samplers, YSI turbidity probes, and various types of level loggers, (2) the measurement of stream flow, occasional during precipitation events; (3) the examination and review of collected hydrologic and water quality data to eliminate errors, and (4) the laboratory analysis of water quality samples for selected parameters. The technician is expected to work between 20 and 35 hours per week, depending on weather conditions, about half of which is outside (in the field). Scheduling is flexible and some work can be conducted from home.

Requirements: B.S. degree in geology, hydrology or related field is required; an M.S. degree is preferred. Ability to effectively use computers and computer software, including Microsoft Excel is also expected. Some heavy lifting and carrying of water samples and batteries is also required.

Salary: $12-$15 per hour, depending on experience; position does not initially include benefits.
