Assistant General Counsel

Position Description:
The Assistant General Counsel is an attorney serving in the Office of Legal Affairs and is responsible for assisting the Vice President and General Counsel and the Associate General Counsels in providing legal advice and services to the University on a range of matters including but not limited to supporting student affairs, student events, athletics, residence life, financial aid, and international studies, including advising on FERPA, public records, Constitutional law, student discipline, Title IX and other nondiscrimination laws protecting students, student safety, trademark, publishing, and broad University contractual matters. Responsibilities also include monitoring the work of special counsel and coordinating with the Attorney General of Ohio on University legal matters as required. The Assistant General Counsel must be able to work on a level of parity with special counsel and to interact successfully with mid-level and senior officers of the University.

Qualifications:
Education/experience/licensing:

JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school;
Must be currently admitted to practice law in the State of Ohio;
One to three years’ experience practicing in a broad range of legal areas, such as those listed above or commensurate experience in higher education compliance; and
Qualification for appointment as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio.
Experience serving as legal counsel in a higher education, corporate, or public sector setting is desirable, but not essential.

Excellent communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills;

Working Conditions:
Works in a professional office environment with high stress levels. Responsibilities may include traveling to other University offices or departments, or to court or administrative agency meetings, hearings, etc.
