The Summit Daily News, located in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, seeks a sports reporter to cover prep sports, the outdoors and the ski industry. Here at the Summit Daily, we live to tell the story of Summit County, where outdoor enthusiasts come to ski, snowboard, mountain bike, backpack, trail run, rock climb, raft, kayak, sail, SUP, fish, hunt, camp need we go on? We're looking for an adventurous spirit with a love for the outdoors and mountain towns. This is not a position for beginners or someone looking to subsidize their powder habit. We need a mature, ambitious storyteller who can turn a phrase, shoot an image, edit a video and tweet all on deadline with snow boots on. Full disclosure: It snows here a lot if we're lucky.
Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to): Generate 8-10 stories per week and can take his or her own photos and video. Demonstrates effective use of social media tools (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to source stories and drive traffic to our website and print product. Work well with community leaders/figures as well as other newsroom staff. Be flexible in a changing, fast-paced environment. Ensure accuracy, fairness and correct spelling in all reporting and editing duties. Follow direction and vision of the Summit Daily News editor. Make assigned deadlines without exception. Fill in for reporting vacancies as needed. Be ethical within the guidelines set by the editor. Be a team player and help where needed.
Qualifications: Must be available to work nights and weekends. Must be able to work outside in varied weather conditions. Must have the ability to ski or snowboard at an intermediate level. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. Must have a current driver's license or the ability to get one. Journalism degree, preferred. One year of experience in reporting, preferred. Digital photography and videography experience, preferred.
