Are you interested in writing or reporting on topics related to faith and justice? Sojourners is seeking applications for its Journalism Cohort, a part-time, remote program that offers hands-on, paid training for freelance writers from historically marginalized communities.

Applications are due by May 5, 2025 at noon EST.

About Sojourners

Sojourners is an independent, award-winning print and online magazine of faith, culture, and politics. Our mission is to inspire hope and action by articulating the biblical call to racial and social justice, life and peace, and environmental stewardship.

About the Program

Journalists help articulate the truth about the kind of world we live in and the kind of world we want to see. Yet journalism has been closely intertwined with this nation’s history of race, religion, and democracy; the people reporting the news and the people whose viewpoints the news amplifies do not often reflect the full and diverse promise of the world we inhabit or envision.

The Sojourners Journalism Cohort was created to address this critical gap. To date, eleven participants have completed the program, writing on a variety of topics, while enriching their professional and personal journeys.

Positions available

All positions are freelance, remote, and require no travel time or expense.

  • News reporter (3 positions)
  • Opinion writer (3 positions)

Cohort members will work with an experienced editor and receive guidance on interview strategies, research, pitching, and journalism ethics. Participants will have flexibility to write on their own time while also attending pre-scheduled video-based training and mentorship meetings. Members will write 3-5 faith and justice articles for sojo.net over the course of the program.

Benefits and Compensation

  • Monthly video-based training (5 sessions)
  • Mentorship with experienced editors
  • $500 upon successful completion of the first training session
  • $500 after successful completion of the final training session and program evaluation form.
