Responding to the needs identified by school administrators for additional support for their students who were at risk for school disengagement due to similar challenges listed above, the AmeriCorps School-Based Mentoring Program was started in 2000 by Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC). PRC collaborated with RMYC for six years prior to assuming full fiscal and programmatic responsibility in 2006. The need for emotional, social and academic support remains the same, although the student population has grown, especially within the Latino demographic. Thus, the mentoring intervention strategy has remained consistent and effective, with the added value of providing after-school programming and service learning projects. The AmeriCorps program has grown in the number of mentors, originally three, to the current ten in a total of nine schools.
