Job Description

The risk management consultant is key to helping MCIT carry out its mission of providing cost-effective coverage with comprehensive and quality risk management services to its members through working directly with members to manage their specific risks.

MCIT is a joint powers government entity made up of Minnesota counties and associated public entities that pool resources to provide property, liability, auto, cyber and workers’ compensation coverage to members. MCIT offers a collaborative work environment and excellent benefits, including a pension plan.

Core Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of the director of field services, the risk management consultant:

  • Provides risk management advice and coverage guidance
  • Develops resources
  • Coordinates and communicates information to members related to MCIT’s risk management and information/education programs

Typical Duties

The following are common duties of the risk management consultant:

  • Respond to member inquiries or coordinate responses with appropriate individuals regarding coverage, liability issues, service needs and claims submissions
  • Identify member program service and coverage needs and follow up with risk management advice
  • Conduct basic research regarding risk management issues and prepare written summaries as needed
  • Review and provide risk analysis on contracts, leases and joint powers agreements
  • Develop written materials on risk management issues and coverage topics for MCIT publications
  • Develop and present risk management and coverage-related materials to member employees and elected officials
  • Facilitate new member application process

Required Qualifications

  • A property/casualty insurance agent license or the associate in risk management (ARM) designation from the Insurance Institute of America or a certified insurance counselor (CIC) or certified risk manager (CRM) designation from the National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research
  • At least three years of experience in an insurance or risk management-related position
  • Possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle driver’s license

Or

  • 10 years of direct experience in the areas of risk management, loss control, underwriting, claims or as a broker
  • Possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with local government, service organizations or associations
  • Training or teaching experience
