Job Details
Responsibilities
California Institute of Technology / Jet Propulsion Laboratory is seeking a Technologist II.
Under the direction of the Technical Group Supervisor, serve as member of the 355L Advanced Deployable Structures team. Assume responsibility for developing packaging configurations for space instruments, including developing architectures for stowing, deploying, and testing of precision space structures. Train other members of the group in creating folding patterns and packaging strategies to solve unique challenges in deployable structures, including applications of origami and origami-inspired folding techniques. Contribute to mechanical engineering team efforts to define, coordinate, balance and integrate technical and programmatic issues in an end-to-end manner to ensure that the total system satisfies requirements, expectations, and constraints within allocated resources and with acceptable risk.
Perform ground testing of precision structures including:
- defining test campaigns, developing required gravity offloading systems, implementing metrology strategy to obtain the required measurements, and data post-processing.
- Contribute to the development/maintenance of system architectures, requirements and interfaces.
- Participate in managing technical resources; analyzing/modeling designs; verifying/validating the system; assessing risk management; and controlling the development process for novel space systems.
Qualifications
- Ph.D., or equivalent, in Space Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related technical field, plus 6 months of professional, scientific or research experience, including some experience with novel technologies in the fields of space robotics, polymer chemistry, and organometallic chemistry;
- developing analytical models and finite element models to study novel structures;
- studying the propagation of acoustic waves in three-dimensional periodic lattice truss structures;
- writing C++ code to develop numerical solvers to predict structural performance;
- writing up scientific findings.
