The Glenwood Springs Post Independent seeks someone to take on an unusually blended beat: education and arts and entertainment. On the education side, you would focus on telling the stories of students, teachers and take a look at big picture issues: How many students are graduating with bilingual certifications? How has the USDA's free lunch for all affected families and students? You would also provide critical election coverage leading up to our school board elections in November. On the arts and entertainment side, you would dive into the wonderful world of live music, visual arts and more that runs throughout the Colorado River and Roaring Fork valleys. From the Ute Theater in Rifle to the Carbondale Creative District, Garfield County bristles with creative energy. Candidates fluent in both English and Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to: Reporter generates 8-10 stories per week and will work with our on-staff photographer for planning corresponding photos and video. Demonstrates effective use of social media tools (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) to source stories and drive traffic to our website and print product. Ensure accuracy, fairness and correct spelling in all reporting and editing duties. Follow direction and vision of the editor. Make assigned deadlines without exception. Be ethical within the guidelines set by the editor. Be a team player and help where needed.
Qualifications: College degree in journalism or communications preferred, but not required. At least two years of experience in newsrooms is preferred, but recent college graduates with student newsroom experience are encouraged to apply. Must have good written/verbal communication skills (Ability to speak, read and write English fluently and effectively). AP Style, social media, digital photo/video experience required. Driver's license, reliable transportation and current automobile insurance required.
