About The Family & Intercultural Resource Center
The Family and Intercultural Resource Center has been serving Summit County, Colorado since 1993 by providing parenting education, emergency assistance and community support, a food bank, cultural integration and an affordable thrift store. The FIRC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit working to build strong families and a strong community by providing people with the tools and education to be successful parents and community members.
About The Executive Director Position
The Executive Director’s primary responsibility is to maintain the FIRC as a strong, sustainable, and well-regarded resource to the Summit County community. Specifically, the Executive Director is responsible for:
- Ensuring that the FIRC makes consistent progress to achieving the organization’s strategic goals and overall mission,
- Fundraising with a focus on major gifts from individual and institutional donors,
- Advocacy, community partnership development, and facilitating the FIRC’s role as a neutral convener for the Summit County community, and
- Organizational management.
In terms of scope, the Executive Director oversees 4 departments, an annual budget of $4.7 million, and a staff of 52 with four direct reports. The Executive Director reports to the FIRC Board of Directors.
The position is full-time, with work taking place primarily on weekdays with some evening and weekend responsibilities. The FIRC has offices in Silverthorne and Breckenridge and the Executive Director position is primarily located in the FIRC’s Silverthorne office. FIRC offers health insurance, a 403b plan, and paid leave for employees. Upon employment, employee must submit to and pass a background check.
Implementation of the Strategic Plan
- Oversee all aspects of implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and adjusting the FIRC’s strategic plan.
Fund Development & External Relations
- In partnership with the Board of Directors and Development Director, develop and implement an annual fund development plan that is in line with the organization’s strategic goals and programmatic priorities.
- Actively engage in major donor development, including prospect research, cultivation, direct solicitation, and recognition, with both individual and institutional donors.
- Develop strong, long-lasting relationships with the FIRC’s donors in a manner that encourages continued investment in the organization.
- Serve as the organization’s spokesperson at fundraising events, with media, with local officials, and other constituencies.
- The Executive Director is personally responsible for participating in and supporting a variety of different fundraising efforts crucial to FIRC’s financial success in. These include grant writing (private, state and federal), individual and corporate fundraising, house parties and large events.
Advocacy, Collaboration, and Community Leadership
- In partnership with others both inside and outside the organization, proactively seek to influence local policy in a manner that helps advance the FIRC’s mission.
- Serve as a trusted advocate for the community on behalf of issues related to the FIRC’s mission, including housing, access to healthcare, early childhood education, and mental health services.
- Facilitate the FIRC’s role as a neutral convener for the Summit County community, with the goal of identifying innovative short- and longer-term strategies that address key areas of need in the community.
- Actively develop partnerships with other community organizations to help ensure better coordinated, more comprehensive services for shared clients and to increase opportunities for shared funding.
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of community needs within Summit County and actively work in partnership with others to address gaps in service, emerging needs, and opportunities for improved service delivery.
- Oversee the Summit Thrift & Treasure social enterprises, including developing and ensuring the implementation of an annual business plan, supervising the director of the thrift store and collaborating to develop a strategy to increase revenue from the two stores.
- Maintain a strong, productive working relationship with the FIRC Board of Directors.
- With support from the Finance Director, maintain a strong working knowledge of the FIRC’s financial situation, actively address any financial challenges, and think strategically about how to continually improve the organization’s financial sustainability.
- Supervise four staff members, including conducting performance reviews, staff coaching, supporting professional/leadership development, promoting staff retention, and conflict resolution. Additionally, work with these direct reports to develop a strong, cohesive leadership team for the organization.
Qualifications & Experience
- Significant leadership experience, with a style that aligns with the FIRC’s culture (open, transparent, participatory, and engaging). Specifically, at least five years of organizational leadership experience, preferably with a nonprofit similar in size and scope to the FIRC.
- Proven success and a high level of comfort with fundraising, including strong general knowledge of nonprofit fundraising practices and significant personal experience in soliciting gifts from individuals and institutional funders.
- Proven success in developing, implementing, and evaluating organizational strategy and operational plans, with a track record of being able to both think big and operationalize ideas.
- Proven experience with local public policy, advocacy, and coalition-building, plus the ability to represent the FIRC as a neutral community convener.
- Experience working in partnership with a board of directors to maintain the capacity of a nonprofit organization.
- A track record of applying an entrepreneurial approach and business skills within a nonprofit setting.
- A natural affinity for building strong community partnerships and collaborative relationships with external partners.
- A demonstrated personal commitment to creating an inclusive environment and advancing equity, including significant knowledge of cultural competency and equity.
- Experience with staff retention, development, and building a cohesive, motivated team.
- Ability to think strategically and provide leadership within the organization and Summit County community as a whole while also being able to be a hands-on executive director when necessary.
- Experience with or knowledge of the family center model and familiarity with the types of services provided by the FIRC.
- College degree preferred. Bilingual in Spanish also preferred.
