Douglas County PUD has an opening for Journeyman Mechanic at Wells Dam.

General Information: 
Journeyman Mechanics are responsible for major mechanical systems associated with operation of a large hydroelectric generating station. Work shift may be Monday – Thursday or Tuesday – Friday. The Journeyman Mechanic will work under the general direction of the Wells Project Mechanical Foreman. This position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement and there is a one-year probationary period associated with this position.

Core Duties:

  • Comply with federal, state and District safety rules and safe clearance procedures
  • Operate, rig and signal gantry and mobile cranes
  • Fabricate, machine and weld steel and aluminum metals
  • Troubleshoot, repair and maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems for hydroelectric equipment and auxiliary systems
  • Plumbing of steel, copper piping and stainless tubing
  • May Operate District vehicles equipped with a GPS device that monitors vehicle location 
  • Other duties may be assigned 

Successful applicants must have:

  • Satisfactory completion of High School education or equivalent
  • Successfully completed a Three Year Apprenticeship for Hydro Mechanic or five years of equivalent work experience in a large hydroelectric generating station
  • Capability of working alone or with other crafts personnel in a safe and effective manner
  • Work experience performing inspection, repair, maintenance and installation of hydropower plant equipment and apparatus in a hydroelectric generating station 
  • A valid Washington State driver license and proof of acceptable driving record
  • Current First Aid/CPR Card

Preferred skills:
Metal Fabricating, Machining, Millwright skills, Blueprint Reading, Hydraulic Systems

Special consideration will be given to applicants with experience in rigging, welding certifications, or crane operator certification. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to distinguish basic colors
  • Ability to repeatedly lift heavy objects, sometimes weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to work in elevated areas, climb ladders and stairs and walk over uneven surfaces
  • Ability to physically perform heavy work on a variety of surfaces; floors, grating, ladders, etc. 
  • Ability to work in all temperature conditions and outside in all weather conditions
  • Capability of working over water at heights of up to 100 feet
  • Ability to pass a physical required for working in a Compressed Air Environment
  • Applicant must be physically able to perform the various duties of a mechanic including working in hot, cold, wet, and noisy environments
  • Must have a full range of hearing and sight for personal safety
