Sign Language Interpreter
Deer Park School District 6.25 Hours/Day During School Year. Must be qualified in accordance with the job description $22.28-27.54 per hour + benefits/retirement.
The interpreter provides interpreting and/or transliterating services for students and/or parents needing this service within the educational environment. This environment includes classrooms, field trips, and assemblies, counseling sessions, club meetings, extracurricular activities, IEP meetings, and other educational settings. The interpreter facilitates communication through the use of sign language, spoken English, cultural mediation and knowledge about visual accessibility.
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Current first aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain promptly
- Completion of at least 2 years of study totaling 72 quarter hours at an institution of learning; OR
- Obtained an associates (or higher) degree; OR
- Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal para educator competency test. (PRAXIS
- Graduation from a recognized interpreter training program (ITP)
- Completion of the EIPA with a minimum score of 3.5 and passage of the EIPA written test OR National Interpreting Certification with Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) AND passage of the EIPA written test with a passing score
- Successful completion of a criminal background check.
- Experience of one or more years in an area related to the field of deaf education and interpreting, which could include a non-educational setting.r.
- Fluency in child’s language/communication mode such as American Sign Language, etc with flexibility in using signing skills to support child’s needs.
- Experience working with children
- Training in child development and education
- Knowledgeable of behavior management, inclusion.
- Ability to adapt information, language and curriculum to the individual learning style
- Ability to work as a collaborative team member
- Creative, energetic, flexible and patient.
- Accompanies students throughout the day to classes and interprets spoken language. Works with classroom teachers to interpret instruction When applicable, follows a student’s IEP
- Implement teacher-directed programs with a student on a one-to-one and/or small group basis in general education and/or special education classrooms.
- Adapts classroom work under the direction of the teacher to provide support and/or reinforce learning goals and activities.
- Tutors student individually as necessary in a variety of learning activities; promotes student understanding of materials presented. Reinforces and reviews concepts and skills.
- Participates as a part of the instructional team. Interprets/translates directions and assists in providing continuity of instruction through tutorial support as directed by the classroom teacher.
- Interprets/translates into sign language all appropriate activities in the classroom and other educational settings. Including but not limited to lectures, discussions, films, special projects, assemblies, field trips, clubs, and activities.
- Confers with the student’s teachers to be better prepared for interpreting services.
- Assists with the management of student hygiene if needed.
- Acts as a role model to demonstrate appropriate behavior to students and teach expected behaviors across educational settings.
- Administers assessment materials as trained or delegated.
- Collects and enters behavioral and academic data from various settings.
- Assists in the preparation of instructional materials.
- Assists with learning tasks/activities appropriate to student goals, under the direction of the teacher.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Small group instructional experience desired
- Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively with all staff, students and as a team member, both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to work with students in a warm and confident manner
- Knowledge of student safety rules and procedures
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
