Environmental Project Outreach Intern (Temporary/Hourly). City of Watsonville. $21.00-$28.14/hour. Filing deadline: Thursday, February 4 at 5 pm.
JOB SUMMARY:
Implements and coordinates environmental and sustainability programs and projects in areas such as stormwater pollution prevention.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is an entry-level classification. Employees at this level receive regular instruction or guidance as new or unusual situations arise and are expected to be fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the division.
Examples of Duties
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Site visits to the project location
-
Community kick-off meeting to introduce community block group
-
Identify leaders within the community blocks
-
Plan, organize, facilitate and evaluate neighborhood clean-up days
-
Facilitate opportunities for neighbors to meet and connect safely and in line with all current COVID-19 guidelines.
-
Identify what types of engagement neighborhoods prefer in times of COVID-19. Are “virtual” engagement opportunities effective especially in low-income, resource-constrained communities?

Trash assessment mapping and data entry
Knowledge of:

The different kinds of pollution in the Watsonville sloughs and their impacts
-
Principles and techniques of project management
-
Essentials of community organizing
-
Basic computer skills and familiarity with Google drive
-
Proper English usage, grammar, spelling punctuation, and vocabulary
Ability to:
-
converse fluently in English and Spanish

communicate and connect effectively with people from different backgrounds

effectively and tactfully communicate in both oral and written forms

work outdoors and within the community while following COVID-19 guidelines.

Typical Qualifications
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:

Educational training in community studies, communications, and environmental education among others.
Experience:
-
Two years of experience doing any of the following: in person environmental related outreach, environmental education, community organizing or community focused work.
