Duties: A Police Officer of the City of New London represents the City and performs duties affecting the safety and security of the community. In carrying out the responsibilities of a police officer, a New London Police Department Police Officer: interacts with a culturally and socially diverse population; assists the public; employs discretion in solving problems; maintains public order; prevents crime; enforces laws and ordinances; conducts investigations; makes arrests; issues summonses/citations, and warnings. Duties may entail special assignments. The department's focus is on community policing and partnering with the community to provide a safer environment.

Minimum Qualifications: The work necessitates the use of independent and mature judgement in making investigations and inspections and in deciding what course of action to take in emergency situations. The Police Officer Standard and Training Council regulation stipulates a candidate must be 21 years old to attend the Academy. Candidates must also possess a valid driver's license and a high school diploma or equivalent.
