Burbank Water and Power (BWP) is seeking qualified applicants for immediate hire for the position of Power Production Engineer.

The Power Production Engineer is a manager, a communicator, a subject matter expert, and a collaborator across all disciplines. The Power Production Engineer, reporting to the Power Production Manager, is responsible for supporting operations and maintenance of power generation facilities as well as maintenance of general BWP facilities and grounds; in addition to project management and improvements. The Power Production Engineer plays a key role in maintaining reliable operations, properly maintained facilities, and compliance with federal, regional, state, and local regulations and policies. 

Under general direction, to direct and manage engineering and technical activities associated with the operation and maintenance of natural gas fired electric generation boilers, combustion turbines, combined cycle power plants, and all associated systems; and to do related work as required.


Essential Functions


Directs engineering activities associated with electric generating units, engines powering such generating units, heat recovery units, emission control systems, steam piping and temperation, water treatment and reduction, and plant protection, control systems, monitoring, modifications and improvements; manages environmental and regulatory compliance; directs activities of contractors, consultants, and vendors and oversees contract compliance;  manages construction of associated buildings, structures, and facilities; makes and directs preparation of construction cost estimates; supervises preparation and review of finished work drawings for construction; monitors and inspects construction; prepares and directs preparation of specifications and requests for plant equipment; reviews detailed drafting and engineering calculating work; studies means and methods of securing new plant technology; serves in a technical advisory capacity for the BWP site plan review process; supervises maintenance of records relating to system operations; directs, assigns and evaluates work; makes effective recommendations regarding hiring, promotions and transfers; effectively recommends disciplinary action as needed up to and including termination.



Minimum Qualifications


Employment Standards: Knowledge of plant engineering, design and operating practices related to electrical generating equipment and associated systems and principles and practices of sound personnel management and supervision. Ability to prepare professionally written reports and studies relating to plant engineering; supervise and review the work of engineering and technical personnel; review and prepare specifications, estimates and lists of materials; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

Education/Training: Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance as determined by the City. Example combination includes, but is not limited to, graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering; four years of professional engineering experience in a power production setting which may include service at the level of Associate Engineer or equivalent experience in related engineering disciplines.

License & Certificates:  Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California is required.

• Experience in managing budgets and leading as a Project Manager.
• Experience in developing and managint1 general facilities and grounds maintenance programs.
• Experience in organizing documentation for operations and maintenance, improvement projects, and regulatory compliance.
• Sound eth,cal and business judgment while demonstrating creative problem solving and mature professional communications.
• A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical or other applicable Engineering field.

The City of Burbank is nestled between the Hollywood Hills and the Verdugo Mountains at the edge of the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. Monthly salary range for the Power Production Engineer is $9,192.54 to $12,088.18, dependent on candidate qualifications. Salary is not subject to social security. BWP offers medical, dental, and vision plans as well as a PERS retirement plan and a retiree medical plan.
